Competition Rules

CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

Competition theme: HomeMade

HomeMade - adjective (hōm′mād′): made or prepared at home, locally or by the maker's own efforts.

The humming of the sewing machine, the repetitive motion of a needle passing between the fibers of cloth, the joy of a fresh rotary blade, the gentle steam of a hot iron, the accomplishment of making something with our own hands, these are the things that bind us together. What to some may seem foreign, to us it defines our very existence, that which expresses who we are and amplifies our sense of accomplishment and self-worth. The focus of the HomeMade juried exhibit is to create an item that celebrates our community of makers and all the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” Each quilt will pay tribute to what drives us to create with our hands. It’s about creativity, intention, approach, quality and the pure sense of joy achieved by playing with fabric, threads and finely-crafted tools.

The entries can be art quilts or traditional quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery and/or manipulated fabric, etc. may be used.  Twelve quilts will be selected by the jury to be part of the special exhibit.

General entry specifics: Each entrant may submit up to two works to their local quilt shop. Approximately 80% of each work (60”x 60” quilt) must feature FreeSpirit HomeMade fabric by Tula Pink. We ask that each entrant's finished work include some application of Aurifil Thread too. Please ask that they be specific about the thread color and weights used.  Each quilt shop will then select one quilt to submit to FreeSpirit.

Size of entries: Each work should be no smaller than 60 inches (152.4cm) square (if a quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, the entrant may still enter their work). Each entry must have a 4” (10cm) finished sleeve or casing sewn to the top back edge of the quilt. Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edge of the sleeve. A cloth label with the entrant’s name, address, email address and telephone number must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.

Jury: A jury of experts, including Tula Pink, will select the twelve quilts. The jury’s decision is final. The organizers reserve the right to decide about the quilts for the exhibition upon seeing the actual quilts in person. The organizers reserve the right to refuse any work that does not match the slides submitted to the jury.

See competition calendar below for other important dates.

Length of exhibit: The participating works must be available for one year, from January 2021 through September 2022. Quilts will be returned to entrants in September 2022.

Entrants will be notified of any other venues.

Official language: The official language of the competition is English. US and Canada only.
