Maria Matos is very much inspired by the golden age of illustration, late 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. Her illustrations establish a bridge between this heritage and a more delicate, feminine and contemporary personal approach. Recurring themes are the representation of female figures in a fantastic universe, strongly inspired by traditional fairy tales, framed with fauna and flora with complex and detailed patterns. A big part of her passion for illustration is in the painting process. All her illustrations are handmade and watercolor is her technique of choice. The whole process can be quite long, although she is quick and effective. It’s a meditative process where she allows herself to make mistakes and work with them.
