  • Autumn Friends

Autumn is here! The leaves change color, the wind plays with your hair and the fairy of the first cold weather visits the fields. It is the perfect time to watch sunsets in the warmth of a quilt while sipping a delicious cup of tea and listening to the sound of dry leaves underfoot. Autumn Friends is inspired by my walks in the woods in the golden light, by pumpkin pies, by a little fox who sometimes visits us, and by the thousand colors that announce the change of season.

  • *BioGeo-3

My new and third collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics, is selected from my series of purely intuitive freehand drawings. BioGeo resembles biological shapes rendered in geometric patterns. These organic forms have the bouncy vitality of cartoons and give me great happiness to draw. Detailed and intricate, they radiate a kind of playful, sensuous joy. I see drawing and sewing as close kin. Drawing is the act of pulling a pen or pencil across a surface of paper or canvas or wood, kindred to sewing which is the act of drawing or pulling thread with a needle through fabric. The repetition I use to form my drawings is also akin to sewing: each line and each stitch acts as a mantra in a meditation on creativity. Drawing and sewing—pen, ink and paper like needle, thread and fabric— use materials that stimulate creative energy. BioGeo-3 offers an array of unique, exciting fabrics from white-on-white to blazing and vibrating colors from which I hope you will draw as much creative energy as I did and still do!

  • Brave

I have long relied on my photos, sketches, doodles, and plans to begin any new collection of fabric and find the hunt and gather process to be comforting. However, when I approach other creative endeavors, such as a wall mural, all I do is gather the paints and brushes and simply begin. It is that other approach - that brave approach - that inspires this collection. I made no plans or sketches and used no photographic references, I just trusted my hand and my eye. The beauty in this freeing style, is that the art feels like it has drawn itself. My Brave collection celebrates letting yourself completely give in to color, form, beauty and to chance. Hand-drawn pathways and imaginary florals in stimulating palettes dance through small & simple as well as large & complex designs. I'm inviting you to be BRAVE and let the spontaneity into your patchwork and sewing!

  • *Enchanted Skies

I live in the Land of Enchantment. I will let you guess the name of my state! The food here is enchanted and the skies above me are enchanted too. When I look up, I see a big blue eye hovering in the sky. The sun is a burning white face in the deepest blue sky you have ever seen in your life! Sometimes I paint the shapes of white puffy clouds in my famous paintings. I have seen dragons and lizards and even angels drifting ever so slowly across clear blue skies. Sometimes the clouds in the sky turn gray and black, heavy with rain here in the deserts of my home. The enchanted skies bring us rain during the summer monsoons and sunflowers grow following the sun’s path, smiling at the sun in the enchanted skies. When I went blind at fifteen, my mother took it upon herself to describe the colors in the sky especially during sunrise and sunset. I have been painting those enchanting colors of the wind ever since I moved to New Mexico! My grandmother once asked me in her last breath, “Do you see the quilt in the sky?” I have been looking for that magical quilt in the sky forever. Maybe a quilter from New Mexico or New Zealand can make one for me.

  • Island Vacation

Island Vacation was inspired by the magical atmosphere on the tropical volcanic island in Espiritu Santos, Vanuatu, South Pacific Ocean. Here we experienced tranquil days snorkeling over coral reefs in clear turquoise waters and warm, sunshine filled days strolling barefoot along fine white sands under swaying palms. The locals, Ni Van people, live in thatched grass houses. The women wear bright coloured block printed sarongs and large hibiscus flowers in their hair. Tropical rain storms create drenching moist afternoons. A trip to the daily markets is a feast of colour, excitement, bustle and noise. Produce on display on woven mats are elongated papaya, mangos and bananas. I marvel at the Ni Van children sitting on mats weaving “still green” pandana leaf baskets to bundle up red sweet potatoes. I am enveloped with inspiration from this fresh lively island scene.

  • *Love Always, AM

It has been a joy watching you revisit and savor these timeless designs from my archives. I am so pleased to introduce you to some updates to Love Always. Smaller graphics from early collections like Bohemian and Good Folks have been painted with new colors. Punchy and vintage style florals from Dowry and Garden Party are here to play. We’ve also given you some foundational textures like the delicate but colorful ‘Lace’ print and the reliably plaid and useful ‘In Town’ in all new colors. Not to mention the sun is now shining on Echinacea with colorations that see our favorite blooms on pale backgrounds, but still as glowy as ever. Enjoy, friends! I can’t wait to watch you sew with these!

A love letter from me to you, Love Always, AM, is a signature collection that focuses on some of the juiciest florals and designs that I have ever created! I did not hold back on the bold or the colorful, and I recolored here and there to offer a deep and rich palette. I’ve joined giant blooms with small hand drawn details and I’ve balanced undulating natural florals with calm, rhythmic designs for a steady flow of beauty. I hope you cherish this special dip into my design library, and I can’t wait to see where the inspiration takes you!

When I was young, I saw a documentary about the deepest part of the ocean; Mariana’s trench. This image of sea life has always stuck with me. In this collection, Mariana, I would like you to imagine that you are in your submarine looking through a window and discovering life in the vast ocean. As you work your way down, the background becomes darker, fading from light blues and mints to a bold black. You can see familiar faces, like horseshoe crabs and seashells, and look closely at plankton and lantern fish. The ocean is always a place of wonder and discovery, I hope you find something new and exciting with Mariana!

  • *Nightshade (Déjà Vu)

Nightshade is the newest installment in my annually released “Deja Vu” collection. The Deja Vu category is my way of giving people a new shot at an old collection that they might have missed. I create a brand-new color variation of the original artwork and re-release that variation for new fans and old ones. By issuing the collection in a new color it maintains the value of the original print run by creating a clear distinction between the new re-issue and the original printing. The new version brings with it 10+ years of my own growth and color explorations hopefully giving you something that is even better than the earlier versions! Nightshade was originally released in 2011-2012 as a Halloween collection to much confusion, due to the lack of pumpkins and candy corn, and it has become a cult favorite over the years. Since it was originally marketed as a holiday collection and had a targeted release window it has become one of the most difficult to find collections in my catalogue. Below is the inspiration statement that I wrote for Nightshade over 10 years ago: I thought about what a “Halloween” collection would look like to me. I began to conjure a story about three suspected neighborhood witches, the Von Black sisters, each with their own personalities and back stories and how that might manifest into their physical appearance. I like the idea and the spirit of something dark and beautiful, a little sinister and just a dash of dark humor. The youngest sister is a free-spirited pirate named Neptunia [named for one of my most popular collections at the time: Neptune]. She is bold and unconventional with very little patience for polite society. Fed up with lace and tea parties she collected a crew of like-minded rapscallions and set out on her own pirate ship where she could make her own rules and live by her own code. Adventure is her primary goal and acquisition is her family duty. She sails the seven seas finding rare ingredients and powerful objects to aid in her sisters’ mischief. She is easily identified by her signature eye patch, a feather in her tiny witches hat and a small birthmark under her eye of the moon and star by which she navigates the open ocean. Bella Donna is the middle sister. She is the potions master, a chemist and a scholar. She is named after a poisonous flower and totally lives up to it in every way. Bella Donna is the smart one in the family which is obvious because she wears glasses and everyone knows that is the sign of true genius. She is often called reclusive and stays locked in her laboratory for days on end. No one ever knows what she is up to and they have learned not to ask. The story goes that she earned her ruthless reputation for high standards in high school. Bella Donna was starving for knowledge but the class was falling behind and consequently holding her back. She felt they lacked the proper motivation. She brought homemade brownies to class one day. This was wildly out of character for her and really they should have suspected something sinister immediately. The brownies were infused with a slow acting venom. She had the only antidote which she administered to each student as they successfully performed the experiment of the day. The demonstration achieved two unintended consequences: that year was the highest achieving graduating class in the sciences in the history of the institution and she was never invited to another pot luck again. Bella Donna is identified by a strangely shaped birthmark near her hairline of a skull and crossbones. Scarlet is the eldest sister, the matriarch of the family and the responsible one. She is charming, graceful and knows how to throw a killer cocktail party. She is patient and cunning. Scarlet has an affinity for weather. She can control the skies and change the tides at will. She is particularly fond of water and how it can wear down even the densest stone slowly over time without anyone realizing what is happening until it is much too late. Scarlet is in charge of the family fortune, maintaining it, growing it and providing the funds for her sisters’ ambitious projects. Completely unrelated, but Scarlet has been married nine times. Sadly, each marriage ended tragically due to a strange amount of freakish storms and sudden floods. A large portion of the family fortune is attributed to her and a shocking lack of prenuptial agreements preceding her tragic romances. A small lightning bolt mark can be found under her left eye. Each sister is illustrated in the main print titled “Coven” and again in the new print called “Mini Coven” a scaled down version of the original which I hope you all find useful. I added a few other prints for the re-issue of Nightshade that I think will be really fun to sew with. A scaled down and more subtle version of Spider Blossoms will make a great non directional accent piece for the larger prints. Another piece making its debut is “Fishnets”. I thought that Scarlet needed a little something to show her sexy side since she is so buttoned up and shouldered with much responsibility. Fishnet is perfect for backgrounds and setting. I changed the black in the collection to a very deep purple that would be impossible to match to a solid so this print is my way of giving you that with a little something extra for fun.

  • *Rust & Bloom

My second collection for FreeSpirit, Rust & Bloom, is inspired by the beauty of nature. Rust & Bloom features patterns that can be found in nature along with a nod to the evolution of living things. My inspiration can be drawn from the smallest details of nature such as a beehive pattern, a rolling tide, to the natural patterns of ice on a window pane. Color also plays a large role in my inspiration. The colors I choose for Rust & Bloom show the beauty of a full day in nature, from the ochre skies of a morning sunrise to the deep blues of a winter night. You can see colors being pulled from all seasons of the year in Rust & Bloom. The twelve designs in this collection are made from my original monotypes. Monotypes are a one-of-a-kind printmaking practice that I use to create my artwork. Monotypes are created by painting directly onto a plate and running the plate through a printing press. Monotypes cannot be reproduced and are therefore different from other printmaking processes like intaglio that are etched into a plate. In my monotypes, I utilize the unique and unexpected textures of both natural and man-made objects such as vegetable wrappers, bubble wrap, leaves or dried flowers. I enjoy this printmaking process because it involves a sense of spontaneity, and it always includes an element of surprise. This collection is meant to be like taking a long walk through nature. I hope you enjoy!

The ocean - with its changing colors, fluid movement and shoreline surprises - is my constant Muse. This collection honors the many women in my life who love and value the depth of beauty in the coastline as much as I do. We are connected through small moments, conversations and shared admiration. I am often in awe of their talents, especially when my fabrics become part of something more. I hope these organic, modern coastal patterns of waves, tidelines and ocean elements that all originate from my watercolor paintings, speak to my Sea Sisters near and far and inspire and spark their own boundless creativity

  • *Scalloped Hills 2

This collection of Scalloped Hills was inspired by the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse. The Palouse is a magical place nestled in the bottom southeast corner of Washington State. Think upon gentle hills, covered in tall green, flowing grass which grows into beautiful golden wheat stalks come August. Eventually, these hills roll into a beautiful white frost all winter. The Palouse is an enchanting place, and I wanted to share that with the world, in my own little way.

  • *Storyboard

Every artist is a storyteller and each creation is a chapter. With each new artwork by a maker, their own unique story unfolds. Storyboard, my first collection with FreeSpirit, tells my story. It reflects my journey as an artist, in all its layers. The collection pulls images from work I have made over time and therefore is a snapshot of my creative evolution. The designs are representative of the core elements of my work, which is typically abstract, textural, grungy and distressed, colorfully muted, deeply layered, and filled with text – used both as a design element and an expression of meaning. Storyboard represents my beliefs that more is more, the littlest detail makes the biggest impact, there is beauty in the imperfections, and you are always only one layer away from magic.

  • Temple Garden

The spring wind blows down the valley from the great mountain scattering the blossoms across the moss-covered stepping stones and the fresh green grass. As summer arrives the snow leopards come down from the hills and shelter from the heat, sleeping under the shade of the scent-laden dangling panicles of wisteria. Exotic birds with brightly coloured plumage fly amongst the huge peony blooms. Butterflies flutter over the scent-laden chrysanthemums and morning glory flowers. As summer turns to autumn and mists start to shroud the valley, the delicately patterned maple leaves turn to multi-coloured hues and drift into the stream as it tumbles down the mountain side over moss and fern-covered boulders. Eventually the leaf-filled stream feeds into the temple pond where the brightly coloured fish play among the water lilies and floating leaves. I hope that this same magic and beauty will inspire all of your quilting and craft projects and help to make each of you as happy as the snow leopards are as winter turns to spring, then summer, then autumn and the great dance of life and renewal continues onwards.
